Ancillary CPD Providers

Besides the Dedicated 3rd Party Providers listed above, other 3rd Party CPD providers offer recognised CPD on an occasional basis (as opposed to providing CPD as their main focus). These providers typically offer other products such as publications and software. SAIT will accept the CPD of these providers as long as SAIT has advanced notice to ensure that this CPD provided is offered in the required verifiable format. The provider must also notify the attendees of the verifiable nature of this CPD in advance (and not after the fact).

These providers include Lexis Nexis, SAGE, Softbyte, and the Taxpayer (Magazine).

Tax Firm CPD Providers

Tax firms may qualify as a third set of recognised CPD providers. These firms typically provide tax training to their staff and external training to clients (and potential clients). SAIT will recognise this internal training of staff upon a year-end review. SAIT will also accept external CPD training by these tax firms as long as SAIT has advanced notice to ensure that this external CPD is provided in the required verifiable format. The provider must notify the attendees of the verifiable nature of this CPD in advance (and not after the fact).

General Need for Recognition

SAIT tax practitioner members must undertake 30 hours of CPD per year. Of this amount, 18 of these hours must be verifiable. SARS breaks this verifiable 18-hour requirement into three groups:

  1. Tax practitioners must perform 10 hours of verifiable tax CPD
  2. Tax practitioners must perform 6 hours of verifiable CPD with tax as a subject matter or other business-related topics
  3. Tax practitioners must perform 2 hours of verifiable CPD with ethics (possibly tax ethics) as a subject matter

Only verifiable CPD requires 3rd party recognition; non-verifiable CPD can be undertaken with any provider regardless of recognition given that non-verifiable CPD is based on self-declaration.

SAIT third-party recognition is also not required for verifiable non-tax CPD learning related to business services (such as accounting, law and economics)). Third-party non-tax CPD of this nature will be accepted at face value unless SAIT specifically determines that this third-party CPD is found to lack professional learning standards. Any determination of this nature will be specifically announced and applied solely on a prospective basis. General ethics unrelated to tax will be accepted in the same fashion.

It should be remembered that SAIT is a tax professional body. SAIT is not in the position to be endorsing or otherwise recognising areas of skills and professions outside the tax landscape.
